I chose the book nothing but the truth because my older sister recommended it to me that it was amazing. I also chose it because it looked interesting from the brief summary on the back.

Genre

The genre of the book nothing but the truth in my opinion is fiction, young adult and a little bit of humor. The first category it fits into is fiction for the obvious reason of that these events never happened and are untrue, with no real facts in them. The next category it would fit in to is young adult, which means it, is geared towards a younger audience, instead of children or adults. You know this because the book is centered around a ninth graders life and has many things that teen agers could and will relate to. Like how the main Philip Mallory doesn’t always tell the truth and the consequence’s that come with his lies, which is something many teens can relate to. The last section it would fit in to is humor. The book has a rather ironic sense of humor to it.in the book Philip is just trying to get into a new homeroom but he ends up becoming the star of all the media just because of a lie, which ironically is the last thing he wanted. Those in my opinion are the main categories that the book Nothing but the Truth fit into.

Plot

The plot of Nothing but the Truth is just one big misunderstanding between student Philip Mallory and his English teacher, Miss Narwin over whether or not he should be able to sing the national anthemnor not. Although Philip only started singer the national anthem which was meant to be observed in silence to get out of Miss Narwin class because he thought that it was her fault he was failing her class and not allowed on the track team. He ended up creating a national debated on the matter, causing more and more trouble all because he lied and said he was just singer because he felt it was the right thing to do, to respect his country.

Three charactors

Philip Mallory is a tack obsessed ninth grade boy, with a bad habit of bending the truth. Philip is an athletic well rounded, 15 year old boy, with average height and body build, he has brown hair and brown eyes as well .He has hates miss Narwin for many reasons. One of I which is he believes that she hates him and that’s why he is failing her class and not being allowed on the track team (you have to have a C average to be on the team). Philip wants to be kicked out of Miss Narwin’s, but he just ends up getting suspended for it, class so he begins singing the national anthem, which at his school is supposed to be observed in respectable silence, to anger her. At first he is only kicked out of her class and not transferred cause his principal to have to call home. Philip doesn’t want to get in trouble at home, so he tells his parents that it’s not his and that he should be able to sing the national anthem in respect for his country and the only reason he got kicked out of class was because Miss Narwin hates him. Philip has a tendency to bend the truth to get what he wants and according to all of his teachers he is a very obnoxious young man, but to his friend he is the funny man. Miss Narwin is a ninth grade English teacher, who is always look out and trying to do what is best for the students. Although she is unsympathetically and doesn’t laugh at the jokes Philip makes about the books she has them read, she only does this because she feels that it is what he need to make it in her class. Even though she doesn’t have the easiest job in the world she loves to teach more than anything, teaching is her one true passion. It is something she has wanted to do since she was young and it is the only job she could ever imagine herself having. Miss Narwin did not want Philip to be suspended for singing but the principal said that he was going to get suspended no matter what because he already had too many misconducts marks on his record. Yet Philip still blames Miss Narwin for everything that happens to him and she is very much aware of this when Philips national debate on whether he should be allowed to sing or not ends up getting her on a temporary leave till the matter is sorted out. Dr. Joseph Palleni is the vice principal at Philips school. He was the one who suspended Philip for humming the national anthem during class. Although he keeps saying through the book that he doesn’t want to blow up the issue he is the whole reason the whole matter got as out of hand as it did. He tells all the reports what they want to know despite the fact that Dr. Doane, the principal, told him not to. He also was the one how decided that Miss Narwin should take a leave from school.

Themes/ Big ideas

The first theme of the book Nothing but the Truth is truth and lies. Throughout the book Philip lies about the reason he was humming the national anthem. When he tell his parents he is being expelled for this they call the school to tell them that they have to allow him to sing the anthem because there is nothing wrong with respecting his country. This is what starts a national debate on whether or not children should be allowed to sing the anthem during school or not, Because of these lies he ends up getting him expelled causing him to no longer be allowed on the track team and his English teacher Miss Narwin to be put on leave. Even was liked by everyone who was in her class and they all felt that it was unfair for her to be put on leave for doing nothing wrong. Philips lies caused many people’s daily life’s to be effected all from what he thought to be a harmless lies. In the end when he tell truth on national television and even though everything doesn’t go back to normal he learns that telling the truth is the best way to go.

major conflict

The one major conflict in the book Nothing but the Truth is between Phillip Mallory, a ninth grade student, and Miss Narwin, a ninth grade English teacher that happens to have Philip, who is a very big class clown, as one of her student. Philip is failing Miss Narwin’s class and he is of the belief that she is just doing it because he hates him. So he tries to get kicked out of her class room by humming along to the national anthem, even though it is supposed to be observed in a respectful silence. He is sent out of the class several times and after about the fifth or sixth time the vice principal expels him. When Philip is expelled he thinks that it is all Miss Narwin’s fault. Miss Narwin however was against the ideas of expelling Philip and just wanted to allow him to transfer class rooms. But after a while of Philip telling lies she gets feed up with him and begins to tell her side of the story the staff and teacher. Although the majority of the staff and students where on Miss Narwin’s side she still was hated by many around the nation for’ not letting him sing the anthem’. In the end their conflict between each other is resolved and Philip tells the truth about what happen and the real reason he sang the national anthem out loud.
